Coming Around Again - Chapter 17

     Chapter  17
‘It’s so good to have you back Kate.’
Rachel and Kate were having lunch together in their favourite café on Kate’s first day back in work.  Their Chicken Caeser wrap was a mouthwatering concoction that had both girls salivating at the mere thought of it and today was no exception. Having placed their order they found a seat in the back conservatory which looked out on the beach below. The waves crashing against the cliff face looked wonderful as the foam swirled in every increasing patterns. The women felt warm and protected as they looked out at the distruction below.
‘The place hasn’t been the same without you. I told you we were lost now do you believe me?’
Kate laughed.
‘I don’t think you were lost but there’s a hell of a lot of work not getting done. I can’t believe the mountain of paperwork in Eugenes office. The EU are looking for their paper mountain back!’
Laughing Rachel responded.
‘See this is what I missed. I knew you could add some light relief to the situation. I’ve tried, but they don’t seem to get my sense of humour like you do.’ Rachel was grinning mischievously.
‘Why?’ Kate asked apprehensively, what have you been up to?’
‘Nothing.’ Rachel grinned and said indignantly. ‘Why do you automatically think I did……Ok actually there’s no point in not telling you, you’ll find out anyway. I kinda photo-shoped some pictures of Eugene and that bitch Arlene from accounts and well let’s just say they unfortunately got into the wrong hands.’
Kate laughed at her friend.
‘I think you need to clarify not only the nature of the pictures but what you mean by the wrong hands?’
‘Well,….’ Rachel was laughing now and tried to catch her breath. ‘Let’s just say the pictures depicted Arlene and Eugene in positions neither of them even knew existed. Mister missionary position himself wouldn’t have even known it was possible to get your body into those!’
‘Oh Rach, you’re unbelievable. You could get yourself fired for that sort of stuff.’ Kate  couldn’t help laughing.
‘Really? I see it as an educational exercise. In fact he should actually pay me for the tutorial.’
‘Please tell me you didn’t tell him that.’ Kate asked shocked.
‘I was hoping to but when the steam stopped coming out his nose and ears he gave me a disciplinary warning so I used my better judgement -  which I know you think tends to spend the majority of its time on vacation - and kept my mouth shut!’
‘Rach, you really were lucky he didn’t fire you.’
‘Sure who would he get to do all the dirty work? Although now you’re back he may no longer have a use for me.’
‘I think there’s enough work for both of us and looking at the paper mountain I’ve returned to probably a third person.’
‘Well then. I’ll take the disciplinary action and put my head down. I can’t guarantee nothing like that will happen again but now that my conscience is back working here maybe I won’t be getting into so much trouble.’ Rachel reached out and touched Kate’s arm.
‘All joking aside it really is wonderful to have you back Katie. Everyone, not just me, has missed you.’
‘Thanks mate. It’s good of you to say. I have to admit I was nervous coming back. My brain hasn’t been used in a while I feel that things have moved on so quickly without me I may never be able to catch up.’
‘You? Kate Maguire your brain could sleep for 100 years and still manage to out run any of us here within five minutes of waking up. I don’t think that’s going to be an issue. It’s dealing with Mr. Personality in his corner office that may prove difficult. The power has gone to his head while you weren’t here reigning him in.’
‘Don’t worry, give me a week and I’ll sort that out.’ Kate responded convincingly.
‘That’s my girl. Yippee. The girl is back.’ Rachel responded and they laughed companionably together.
